20th Annual All Ag Meeting and Banquet Highlights

On August 29th at Heritage Hall at Lostcreek Reserve in Troy, 103 people attended the 20th Annual All Ag Meeting and Banquet, combining business for Miami SWCD, Miami County Farm Bureau, OSU Extension Miami County and the Miami County Ag Society.  Those attending enjoyed great talks by Trevor and Justin with the Ohio Hemp Company and Megan Bradshaw with Troy Miami County Public Library speaking on the History of Miami County Dairies.

The program portion of the evening included presenting awards for Miami SWCD Cooperators of the Year, Mike and Holly Buchanan, owners and operators of the trout farm, Stillwater Springs Farm, outside West Milton.  The Buchanans have entered into programs and practices encouraged by this office and its partners, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and have shown real interest and involvement in conservation, conservation education and good stewardship. In addition to wetland restoration, pollinator areas and more, Mike and Holly received a sign to hang on their property, a plaque and jackets to show our appreciation for their efforts.  Other awards for the evening included the presentation of the Educator of the Year award. Jessica Helsinger, Covington FFA Instructor, has spearheaded and supported efforts to build pollinator patches on the Covington Schools campus, invited and involved younger classes to take part in agricultural events to promote their interest in farm life and more. Jessica couldn't attend the All Ag Annual Meeting last Thursday, but on the following Tuesday morning, we were happy to present her award to her in front of students and fellow educators.

Miami SWCD Larry Studebaker Scholarship winners Jennifer Requelme and Miyu Sakumoto, recipients each of $1000 scholarships, were also mentioned.  Voting also took place during this evening for two seats on the Miami SWCD Board Supervisors.  Congratulations to Diane Yingst and Andy Shuman on their re-election to the Board.

The intent of the All Ag Meeting and Banquet is to combine business of several offices to better serve an audience perhaps mostly made up of farmers, landowners and those interested in agriculture.  The remainder of the evening was spent by these partners relaying news and information to the audience.  Our meal was catered by Graze On and was very much enjoyed.  Also, several local producers like the Milkweed Patch, The Ohio Hemp Company and Cherry Street Farmers Market set up table displays to represent their businesses.  We appreciate all who attended and very much look forward to the next All Ag Annual Meeting and Banquet.

  • STILLWATER SPRINGS PARTNERS WITH FOREMOST SEAFOOD

If you know Foremost Seafood, then you know there's few things we always try to implement in our business model:

    1) Aquaculture - We believe in aquaculture, but also know not all farms are created equally. We want to know where our food is coming from and how the animals are being treated.

    2) Supporting other independent/family businesses. We wouldn't be here without the support of our community and we know what it means to have individuals and companies purchase from your establishment.

    3) Ohio grown/made. This is a given! How cool to have access to wonderful products in your own backyard.

All that being said, we are so excited to announce our partnership with Stillwater Springs Farm. Located in West Milton, OH, Mike and Holly Buchanan purchased the property in 2023. Their trout farm and cold water hatchery uses two unique freshwater springs in which the trout are raised.

They raise the trout from eggs and have a gravity fed system. They take extreme pride in their sustainable, natural, and ethical farming practices, as well as environmental stewardship to minimize their ecological footprint.

Not far from the historic and State Scenic Stillwater River from which the farm gets part of its name.  The history of Stillwater Springs Farm by name is relatively recent.
